MEDICARE ADVANTAGE

PART D PRESCRIPTION DRUG COVERAGE

MEDICARE SUPPLEMENT (MEDIGAP)

Medicare Advantage plans provide your Part A and Part B benefits through a private insurance company approved by Medicare. Many plans include prescription drug coverage and additional benefits. Costs, provider networks and benefits vary by plan.

MEDICARE SUPPLEMENT (MEDIGAP)

PART D PRESCRIPTION DRUG COVERAGE

MEDICARE SUPPLEMENT (MEDIGAP)

Medicare Supplement insurance works alongside Original Medicare and can help pay some out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare doesn’t pay. With most Medigap policies, you can use any provider that accepts Medicare.

Medicare Part D helps cover prescription medications. Plans differ in formularies, pharmacy networks, premiums and what you pay for your prescriptions.

How Medicare Coverage Fits Together

There are two main ways to receive your Medicare coverage. Understanding the difference is an important first step.

ORIGINAL MEDICARE PATH

Original Medicare includes Part A and Part B. You may also choose a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy to help with certain out-of-pocket costs and a separate Part D plan for prescription drug coverage.

MEDICARE ADVANTAGE PATH

Medicare Advantage is an alternative way to receive your Part A and Part B benefits through a private insurance company. Many plans also include Part D prescription drug coverage and additional benefits.

AN IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE

Medicare Supplement (Medigap) works with Original Medicare. It does not work with a Medicare Advantage plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Original Medicare is provided by the federal government and includes Part A and Part B. Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare and provide your Part A and Part B benefits through the plan. Many Medicare Advantage plans also include prescription drug coverage and additional benefits.

No. Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policies are designed to work with Original Medicare, not Medicare Advantage. If you choose Medicare Advantage, a Medigap policy cannot be used to pay the plan’s out-of-pocket costs.

If you use Original Medicare and do not have other creditable prescription drug coverage, you may want a separate Part D plan. Many Medicare Advantage plans already include Part D coverage. Going without creditable drug coverage for too long can result in a late-enrollment penalty.

The opportunity to change coverage depends on your situation. Common periods include the Annual Enrollment Period from October 15 through December 7, the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period from January 1 through March 31, and certain Special Enrollment Periods triggered by qualifying circumstances.

No. There is no charge to you for our Medicare insurance guidance or enrollment assistance. We can help explain your options, answer questions and assist with the enrollment process.
